Research and Development

Syngenta places major emphasis on innovation as a key success factor and is focusing on discovering both natural and man-made active substances to help growers protect their crops from pests and enhance their harvest.

With a global research and development investment of around $1.5 billion annually and more than 5000 people involved in R&D (from a total of 25,000 staff), Syngenta has a powerful capability to invent, develop and sustain innovative products.

Syngenta seeks innovative solutions to our customers' needs through a continual focus on research and development.  As well as our own team of development specialists in Australia, we are involved in collaborative projects with local universities, associations, co-operative research centres, the CSIRO and Federal Departments of Agriculture and Primary Industries. Past notable partnerships included the University of Sydney, Daratech, the Forest Herbicide Management Research Group and the University of Melbourne.

Bringing a new crop protection product to market in Australia can take more than a decade. Hundreds of thousands of new compounds are screened by Syngenta’s scientists each year, but of these only a small handful will ever reach the final stages of product development. For every new product introduced to Australia, there are about 100,000 compounds that do not make it. We’re constantly innovating, evaluating and testing to make sure that Australian growers have access to the most effective and efficient products possible.

Syngenta’s local investment in R&D aims to ensure the products the company brings to market are inherently suitable to Australia’s climate and growing conditions. Local R&D means more local projects, bringing new active ingredients to market and broadening our portfolio and customer offering. We have a very strong pipeline of new products and will further increase our investment in Australia in the future, making us Australia’s leading agri-science business. As an organisation, our focus is not purely on selling our products. We are committed not only to R&D but also to educating and advancing the industry as a whole – always with a clear focus on helping farmers increase their productivity.

Innovation and speed – new formulation robot a breakthrough

At seven metres long, seven tons in weight, and requiring a dedicated building to house it, the new Syngenta formulation robot has kicked into gear at the Jealott’s Hill Intl. Research Centre in the UK.

The robot, unique in the agricultural sector, is a breakthrough in innovation and speed of delivery. It will formulate and test hundreds of potential crop protection products each day at speeds that bench scientists can only dream of, helping those same scientists to be more innovative and productive than ever before when creating new products.
