Developing high performing seeds and plants for commercial growers

Growers choose seed varieties based on their growing conditions and markets. They have thousands of seed products with many different characteristics, or traits, available to them. Choosing the appropriate seed can provide different advantages, such as:

- Yield
- Maturation times
- Pest resistance
- Drought resistance
- Germination times
- Hardiness factors
- Disease resistance

Historically, breeders have improved seeds by crossing plants to create beneficial traits.  The basic genetic material that captures these traits in a plant is called its germplasm.  Quality germplasm has traditionally been viewed as the most important aspect of the seed product.  Modern genomics and biotechnology tools now allow us quicker and better identification of beneficial germplasm, leading to the development of seeds with significant grower benefits such as herbicide tolerance and insect and disease resistance.

In addition, a new generation of seed is being developed with plant qualities, or output traits, such as improved taste or nutritional value that benefit the ultimate consumer.

Our seeds product range includes recently launched products using some of the most advanced technology in the key growth sectors of the seeds market.

Vegetable Seeds
Our S&G® vegetable products include cauliflower, sweet corn, beans, peas, tomatoes, cucumbers, and melons.

The Syngenta focus on quality germplasm gives growers, processors and end-consumers such in-demand characteristics as:

- Super-sweet sweet corn: ideal for processors to freeze or can
- Seedless watermelons: a consumer favourite
- Heat-tolerant cauliflower, or cauliflowers ideal for harvesting in cool weather
- Japanese Kuroda style carrots with exceptional field pack-out rates
- Gourmet tray pack tomatoes, sold with the stem attached

This gives our seeds the capacity to add value along the entire business chain, through to the retail shelf.
