Not all insects cause problems for plants. In 2008 our Bioline facility bred 200 billion insects and mites to control crop pests and pollinate plants. That’s more than half a billion insects every day!
Growers can introduce beneficial insects and mites that feed on the pests but do not damage the crop itself. Other insects like bumblebees are important for pollinating these crops.
At Bioline, we breed these insects so that they can be sold to growers worldwide.
We use a variety of breeding programmes to ensure we meet demand. Some insects are bred on plants in greenhouses such as tobacco, beans and marrows. 
Other parasites and predators can only be produced on a pest host, or in climate controlled rooms.
For shipping, our packaging is designed to make sure the insects survive the journey to the customer. They may be packed into sachets, blisters, bottles or bags.
Once our insects have been shipped, timing is everything. It is important that the insects are released at exactly the right time. This ensures they're effective, and ensures the growers are safe.
The insects we breed are used together with selective insecticide sprays that do not harm our beneficial insects. This combined method can reduce both the overall need of - and the growing problem of resistance to - pesticides.
