The small amounts of unused
chemical that may
remain in an empty
container can pose
a risk to the environment
or human health if
not disposed of correctly.
In some countries,
people may use them
again in the home,
for example to carry
and store water.
In others, they
can lead to groundwater
problems in waste
dumps.
Our
approach to managing packaging waste
begins with reducing it at source,
and includes training growers in
how to manage waste. This includes:
- Guidance on disposal of empty containers in all Syngenta training programs and product labels, advocating triple-rinsing to remove residues and damaging containers to prevent reuse
- Developing reusable containers that can returned for proper cleaning and refilling
- Making containers from recyclable materials
- Supporting the development of programs to collect and recycle cleaned plastic containers into products as diverse as rubbish bins, outdoor furniture and irrigation pipes
Containers that come back
Syngenta in Australia has come up with an award-winning solution to the problem of packaging waste. The MAXI-100 drum is an exclusive design, small volume, returnable container which is now used for most flowable herbicide formulations.
The drum's launch in 2002 with just one product with immediately met with strong grower and distributor support, leading to high demand - so use of the drum quickly extended to other products.
