Agriculture and Biodiversity

The rich variety of plants and animals, known as biodiversity, is the foundation for sustainable agriculture and a healthy environment. Biodiversity is fundamental to agriculture, food production and sustainable development. Loss of biodiversity makes ecosystems more vulnerable to changes in the environment, with lower genetic diversity and fewer species to support fundamental ecosystem functions. To increase the productivity of our crops, their reliability and their nutritional value, we must make full use of genetic diversity. For innovation in seeds, biodiversity is the crucial ‘raw material’.

Syngenta contributes to the conservation of biodiversity through innovative solutions for sustainable agriculture.

Syngenta is committed to:

  • The objectives of the FAO treaty on plant genetic resources for food and agriculture, and the Convention on Biological Diversity
  • Access genetic resources in compliance with international and national laws and regulations
  • Support public gene banks vital for the safeguarding of plant genetic resources for food and agriculture
  • Investment in research and development for advances in the use of innovative agricultural practices that enhance production and conserve biodiversity
  • Raise awareness of the contribution of integrated land management practices to secure rural incomes and agricultural biodiversity
