Paraquat is an important and valued product for farmers
Paraquat is used and appreciated by farmers in more than 100 countries, where it is used to treat over 200 different crop varieties. It is sold by Syngenta under the brand Gramoxone®. On the basis of over 40 years’ experience with this successful herbicide, we and our customers are convinced of its benefits for high-yielding, sustainable agriculture. It has also allowed the development of no-tillage systems, safeguarding many millions of hectares of land susceptible to erosion. Furthermore, millions of families in developing countries benefit from the use of paraquat in farming. Women, in particular, can dedicate their time to other more valuable and important tasks than the arduous and time-consuming removal of weeds by hand.
Numerous reviews by scientific and regulatory bodies, and international organisations such as the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO), the World Health Organization (WHO), EU authorities and to the US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) have confirmed that the use of paraquat does not present a health risk, provided that farm workers follow the clear and simple instructions. Studies and projects monitoring workers using Paraquat over many years have repeatedly shown that there are no adverse health effects associated with its long-term use.
Syngenta engages in an unparalleled and comprehensive stewardship programme to ensure and promote the safe use of its products, in particular in developing countries. Today, over one million farmers and users are trained each year in the safe and sustainable application of this active substance. Special programmes for small farmers are organised in some 35 tropical countries. This training also takes account of illiteracy or lack of formal education and training. Year after year, Syngenta invests tens of millions US dollars in its stewardship programme. This programme, and the commitment it reflects, is proof of our responsibility to protect the lives and safety of those who use the product every day.
To prevent confusion with a beverage, or deliberate misuse, Syngenta put additives in Gramoxone®. We instruct medical personnel all over the world on the correct treatment to any case of poisoning. We also make information and treatment material available. To combat deliberate misuse, we participate in numerous cooperative projects with local, regional and global prevention organizations.
In addition, Syngenta works with registration authorities and interest groups to raise the standards of product and user safety for all paraquat suppliers.
